This shirt, part of our Thought-Provoking Collection, is inspired by the father of the Constitution, James Madison who, in Federalist #45 wrote, “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are FEW AND DEFINED; those that are to remain in states governments are NUMEROUS AND INDEFINITE. The former will be exercised principally on external objects as war, peace, negotiation and foreign commerce with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part be connected.” He goes on to say, “the powers reserved to the several states will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs concern the lives, liberty and properties of the people and the internal order, improvement and prosperity of the state.”

Regular listeners of the podcast know that we regularly discuss Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. This is where the "few and defined" powers granted to the newly created federal government are enumerated.

For purposes of discussion keep two things in mind:
#1 - Who created the federal government? The 13 states!! Which means the states are superior!
#2 - The states ratified a contract (the Constitution) which clearly enumerates the few powers delegated to the federal government. Why would the states allow the federal government (something they created and granted limited powers to) the ability to police itself and/or the states?
